Helcim vs Stripe: Fees, Invoices, and Monthly Cost

Compare costs and payment workflows using the same channel, ticket size, and sales volume.

Helcim uses interchange-plus pricing; Stripe standard pricing uses flat rates by payment method. Neither is always cheaper. Helcim's markup is not the total fee: add card-network costs. Compare the same channel, then include invoice, subscription, software, and migration costs before switching.

Compare your Helcim and Stripe card costs

Use the same domestic card channel for both providers. Enter an estimated interchange and network cost from your statement or quote; these fields deliberately have no assumed average.

Helcim assumptions

Default markup is the entry volume tier, not an all-in rate. Volume discounts use the previous three months of processing; edit for your verified tier. Do not enter a total effective rate as pass-through cost or count network fees twice.

Stripe assumptions

The online default is not the manual-entry rate. Add 0.5 percentage points for Stripe manually entered cards. Invoicing Starter and Billing have separate charges; add applicable costs before comparing. Terminal software and hardware are separate.

Enter both pass-through fields and valid nonnegative rates, positive volume and ticket. Combined percentage rates must not exceed 100%. No Helcim total or savings is shown until the underlying costs are provided.

Formula: monthly volume x percentage costs + rounded transaction count x fixed costs. This is a modeled comparison, not a quote or guaranteed savings. Excludes ACH, international cards, FX, refunds, disputes, hardware, monthly software, custom contracts, and tax. Use the POS cost tool for upfront and monthly software costs.

Helcim vs Stripe fees: compare like with like

U.S. public pricing checked October 14, 2026. Helcim defaults use its entry tier, not automatically the tier matching one month's sales. Stripe custom agreements and product-specific charges can differ. Confirm eligibility and current terms with each provider.

Online card scenarios: volume is not the whole answer

These are CardFeeCheck model examples, not observed merchant results. Assume domestic online cards, Helcim pass-through cost of 2.00% + $0, entry markup of 0.50% + $0.25, and Stripe at 2.90% + $0.30. Exclude all workflow add-ons and fixed monthly costs. The 2.00% input is illustrative, not a provider average or guaranteed rate.

Monthly sales / ticketPaymentsHelcim modelStripe modelDifference
$10,000 / $25400$350$410$60
$25,000 / $50500$750$875$125
$50,000 / $100500$1,375$1,600$225

At $25,000 and a $50 ticket, raising assumed pass-through cost to 2.60% makes the Helcim model $900, versus Stripe's $875. The result reverses without changing sales volume. A headline markup alone cannot predict savings.

Service businesses and invoices

Helcim provides invoice creation and payment collection without a monthly invoicing subscription. Stripe Invoicing charges separately from processing. Compare paid invoice volume and accepted payment methods, not just card rates. For a $1,000 ACH payment, the listed processing formulas give $5.25 at Helcim and $5 at Stripe before any additional product fees. ACH is not a card payment and has different authorization, settlement, and return considerations.

Online checkout and recurring billing

Stripe offers Checkout, Payment Links, APIs, and Billing for configurable online payment flows. Helcim also offers hosted checkout, APIs, and recurring payments. Verify compatibility with your store, scheduling tool, accounting system, and subscription workflow. Billing features and integration effort can outweigh a small processing difference.

In-person payments: check the actual POS workflow

Stripe Terminal is a payment integration, not a complete retail or restaurant POS by itself. Helcim offers its own POS tools. Confirm inventory, tips, receipts, staff access, offline behavior, and supported hardware with the software you will actually run. Include implementation and equipment in the POS total cost calculator. For an out-of-the-box POS alternative, read Helcim vs Square.

Verify your provider assumptions

Check official pricing and the software workflow you need before requesting a written quote. A modeled fee difference is not an endorsement.

Before switching processors

  1. Use a recent statement to calculate your current effective rate, including fixed fees. Use the credit card fee calculator for a statement-style monthly fee audit.
  2. Separate in-person, online, keyed, international, and bank payments. Match card mix and average ticket rather than comparing unlike rates.
  3. Confirm invoice or subscription charges, software subscriptions, supported integrations, and migration work. Never assume stored payment credentials can move without a supported process.
  4. Request written pricing, onboarding requirements, payout terms, and cancellation conditions. Evaluate switching cost alongside modeled annual savings.

Common comparison questions

Is Helcim cheaper than Stripe?

It depends on underlying interchange/network costs, card channel, fixed transaction fees, and extra products. The editable model can favor either provider. Use a quote or representative card data instead of assuming advertised markup is a full rate.

Does Stripe require a developer?

Not for every workflow: hosted Checkout, Payment Links, and Invoicing can reduce custom development. A tailored integration or Terminal deployment may still need compatible software or development work.

Can I compare invoices using only 2.9% + $0.30?

No. That is a standard online card-processing rate, not the complete cost of every Stripe product. Include applicable Invoicing charges and model bank payments separately.

How do I estimate Stripe fees without a Helcim quote?

Use the Stripe fee calculator. Leave Helcim savings undetermined until you have defensible pass-through assumptions. The Stripe vs QuickBooks comparison covers accounting-led invoice needs.
